I'm trying to find out what the truth is about the Egyptian zodiac. I have the book The Sacred Tradition in Ancient Egypt by Rosemary Clark. She claims that there is a 1:1 correspondence between the modern zodiac and the ancient Egyptian model. My girlfriend is a Taurus, which according to Rosemary Clark, is associated with Hathor. If you knew my girlfriend, you would see that this would make perfect sense. Unfortunately I can find nothing else that supports this zodiac translation. Not only that... I have found two other supposed Egyptian zodiacs by searching online, and they are all completely different. I would really like to know what the true Egyptian zodiac signs are...if that is even possible. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter?
Thanks,
Miranda

Re: Egyptian Zodiac
Thu, February 3, 2005 - 12:38 PMIt sounds like an interesting book and I'll have to look it up. I've been completely frustrated trying to find any information on ancient non-Greco-Roman-Arabic constellations. Certainly the Norse, excellent voyagers that they were, must have had names for the constellations. As would all other ancient peoples of North and South America, Asia, Europe, and Africa, but there is a proliferation only of the constellations we know today because they are still what is considered "classical" mythology, that is the mythology to know if you a cultured member of society. If you ask me, society idealizes the Romans entirely too much... conquerers and destroyers that they were.
Unfortunately, when the Romans and later the Arabs took over Egypt, any information on their unique constellation or zodiac became hopelessly polluted by their conquerers. Even today, when modern researchers discuss Egyptian use of constellations and stars, they call them by their "classical" names, rather than give them any Egyptian apellation. It's very annoying.
So anyway...
Since you have the book and we do not (yet), how about a quick rundown of the correspondences. (If it's too much bother, could you just tell me what I would be associated with as a March 3, Pisces?) Does the Egyptian zodiac follow the classical zodiac dates? That would be my first clue that they are based on the classical zodiac and not an Egyptian one, because if their signs and constellations (as well as their counting of months) are different, there's no real reason to have the same dates, right? And do they give a diagram of the stars the Egyptian Zodiac corresponds with at all?
