Hi! I've just joined this group/tribe... and I have a question that maybe some of you could be able to answer: Does anyone know where are the MODERN origins of Orthodox Khemetism? (you know, Orthodox Khemetism as something different from the Hermetic Tradition).
Is Wallis Budge the one that brought back to life the old tradition as something different from Hermeticisism? (If so, who are the other ones that created the MODERN Orthodox Khemetism?).
And last, but not least... how close or how far do you think that Orthodox Khemetism is from the Hermetic Tradition? Do you consider that the medieval Hermetic writers (Marsilio Ficino, etc) were already making the first steps towards modern orthodoxy?
By the way, my idea is not to ask if you like Hermeticism or not (I for one, love it; but that's not the point)... what I am trying to understand is the modern (re)creation of the old Religion.
Oh... Pardon my poor English... it's not my main language (so I often spell words in a confuse way and my grammar is a bit funny, but I have no problems understanding English).
Blessings, Kzwleh

Re: Modern Khemetism
Sat, November 29, 2003 - 2:33 AMHi,
There are a wide spectrum of beliefs and practices with the Kemetic tradition. From Tameran Wicca (Wicca with Egyptian Gods) to Kemetic Orthodox.
I would say most groups dont have a lot to do with the Hemetic Tradition as they are faith based groups working to worship/honor the Ancient Egyptian Gods.
Budge is not a reputable source for anything. He was a poor scholar and an even worse researcher.
I hope that helps!

Re: Modern Khemetism
Mon, December 1, 2003 - 2:29 AMHi!
Thanks a lot for your reply, Paula; I appreciate it. And it helped a lot.
I think that my point was somehow missed... my fault, not yours.
What I meant is: is anyone able to re-build the history of Modern Khemetism? How did we arrive to the place in which Khemetism is today? When was Modern Khemetism born?
I always thought that Budge was a great researcher for his times... times in which Anthropology was still doing some raw steps on Egypt. So, of course, he is not marvelous for our times... but I think that he did it well if we consider the context in which he wrote and the sources he had. Or do you think that he was also terrible in that context?
I'll reveal the reason of my interest... although I love Khemetism, I am not familiar with it's "modern" history... and a friend of mine is doing an abstract on the subject and he's having lots of problems with discovering who are the persons that originated this new rise of the Egyptian Gods. When did people started to practice rites which attempted to re-create the old egyptian rituals? and so on...
Blessings to you,

Re: Modern Khemetism
Thu, August 4, 2005 - 1:57 PMI know this is an old thread, but I just joined so I thought I'd reply anyway.
It's really difficult to discern where the modern worship of Ancient Egyptian deities began. Throughout history there has been periods of interest in Egypt. It is an interesting topic, but not one that can really be researched. If you desire to know the history of the modern Kemetic groups, that can certainly be found out. Most groups started (and some have since fallen apart) beginning with the seventies. This also coincides with Starhawk's reintroducing Wicca or many other new religious movements.
As for Budge, he was a very good scholar for his day. His information is out of date now because we have a more accurate translation of hieroglyphs.
I hope you have already found what you needed, as this post is almost two years old... But if you still lurk on this tribe, I hope this helps.
